Volunteering at the Museum

Since its inception, volunteers have been a driving force in bringing the museum’s mission to life—playing an essential role in preserving and interpreting New Mexico’s unique natural and scientific heritage. Their dedication to collections, research, exhibits, and educational programs has helped ignite a passion for lifelong learning throughout our community.

The impact of our volunteers can be seen across the museum, from the Hall of Stars and the Mars Rover display to the preparation and presentation of New Mexico–certified fossils, artworks that illuminate our natural history, and engaging hands-on explorations at both our main campus and our sister campus, the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center.

More than 500 individuals have volunteered with the museum since its opening, contributing nearly one million hours of service. Some bring expertise in scientific fields represented in the museum, while many others simply share a love of science, curiosity, and learning—and a desire to share that passion with others.

There is a wide range of volunteer opportunities to match different interests and schedules. Anyone interested in joining our volunteer community should contact volunteer.nhm@dca.nm.gov to share more about themselves and learn about current opportunities.
